Traditional Home, March 1998
"Out of the Ashes" by Eliot Nusbaum
Fran Delegeane's Oakland home burned to the ground in the Oakland Hills fire of 1990. She came to CWD with nothing but a concrete foundation and a few requests. She wanted a home that would take advantage of the hilltop location and its stunning views without sacrificing her privacy. Close to retirement, Ms. Delegeane wanted a home that would remain accessible as she and her partner Jim Bahl grew older.

CWD created a unique space with plenty of windows to display the view and admit light, while retaining privacy for the occupants. An elevator and wheelchair-friendly floor plan respond to Delegeane's second request.
In Eliot Nusbaum's article in Traditional Home, "Out of the Ashes" (March 1998, p.114-118), he quotes Bahl on one of the reasons why Delegeane chose Davis: "I think Fran wanted a woman [architect]; she wanted someone who would listen" (114). Later in the article Nusbaum writes that "Davis . . . designed the house of Fran's dreams" (116). visit http://www.traditionalhome.com
